Sugen Bio-pharmaceutical Laboratory
San Francisco, California
This project was a three-story build-out, with a large cafeteria, administration space, biological laboratories, and one floor of executive offices. The building was designed and built with flexibility in mind. Future use and probable renovation over the course of the building’s life were considered. In addition to planning for the “next generation of use”, the building was planned and built with the environment in mind. The design team incorporated materials into the interior design that include wall insulation made from recycled natural fibers, particleboard substrates made from straw, and renewable materials such as linoleum flooring. This building was the first commercial interiors pilot project to become Gold LEED certified. It also was awarded the Sustainable San Mateo County Green Building Award.
Thorburn Associates provided acoustical consulting for sound isolation and mechanical noise/vibration control as well as the design of audiovisual systems for the cafetorium, boardroom, and conference rooms. Key components included portable cameras, speech reinforcement for the presenter, video playback, videoconferencing, and computer graphics displays.
